A dating safety guide for the first month
How to protect your time, money, and personal details from the first match to the first meeting.
Safety is not a suspicion about every person you might like. It is a routine you follow before you have enough information to judge someone. This is practical guidance, not legal advice, and it is not a complete list of every harm.
While you are still in the app
- Keep the conversation in the app until you have a reason to leave it. The app is where block and report still work.
- Do not send workplace details, a home address, a daily route, or financial information to establish trust.
- A video call in daylight is a reasonable step before you meet. A refusal, or a call that never quite happens, is information.
- Use a recent photo of yourself. Using someone else’s photos, or asking another person to do that for you, is a separate harm.
Before you change apps
Moving to WhatsApp, Telegram, or SMS is ordinary. It also drops the dating app’s reporting tools. Move only after a video call, and use a number or account you can abandon. Read the privacy checklist before you grant a new app your contacts, location, or photo library.
Money and urgency
Treat a request for a recharge, a ticket, a medical bill, an investment, or crypto as a stop, including when the story is sad and the deadline is tonight. Romance scams use affection plus time pressure. You do not owe a stranger a transfer to prove you are kind.
A person who will only continue if you pay, invest, or receive a parcel is not arranging a date.
The meeting
- Meet in a public place you can leave without a lift from them.
- Tell a friend the place, the time, and when you will text.
- Arrange your own transport there and back.
- Leave if the person is not the person from the video call, or if the evening turns into pressure about money, drinks, or a second location.
Discomfort is a reason to end the evening. You do not need a better argument than that.
If something goes wrong
Use the app’s block and report tools, and keep screenshots somewhere that is not the chat itself. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. If money has already moved, contact your bank or payment provider and the cybercrime reporting channel where you live. AdultVerdict cannot recover a transfer or investigate an account.
